Content Management Systems (CMS) have become one the Internet’s most powerful web developer tools since PHP. There are many content management systems available for websites but choosing the right CMS can be a problem. There are many mistakes that people make while selecting a CMS for their website. I have detailed some mistakes that will help you select an appropriate CMS for your website.
- Choosing an extremely technical CMS
Many Web CMS are too technical and have a very complicated user interface. This should ideally not be the case with you if you are a nontechnical person. The choice of the CMS does not matter if you deliberately want a complicated CMS, but in the long run where websites need content regularly and on a faster basis, having a geek friendly CMS can be an issue. - Bigger Content Management System Sounds Better
Choosing a CMS because the developers promise a brilliant and helpful user community, or offers a behemoth CMS, it does not mean that the Content Management System is absolutely brilliant. There might be useful plugins or all the wonderful extensions, but the reality is that these systems could really prove to be a trap. The right way forward is in choosing what you are really comfortable with and not being fooled by brilliantly designed ads. There might be a million extensions to choose from, but the reality is that you will only use a few of these. Hence, it’s best to avoid the most expensive and the flashiest content management system available in the online world. - Inexpensive CMS is fine
This mistake is exactly the converse of the preceding mistake. Many people are also led to believe that the simplest or the cheapest CMS is the best for their use. Actually, the cheapest CMS could come with a major flaw that would take away the flexibility and user friendliness of the software. It may also not have the functionalities you need. Therefore, you need to check what you are really buying. Remember, just any CMS will not do. - Avoiding Research
It’s always a good idea to do research before you go in for a CMS. It’s always better to check the sites that the CMS developer has provided as an example. It’s always advisable to talk to people who have utilized the CMS for their website development and check if it was a good idea. The CMS developer you have purchased could also ask you to buy an extra functionality instead of providing it to you as an update. You should really avoid such traps like these. - Letting IT dictate Terms
It’s your CMS alright. At best ask the IT department for their advice. But always insist on asking the web developer on the functionalities you desire. Letting IT run the show might lead to an overtly complex system that could be a pain in the long run. Always select a CMS with requirements that helps you uncomplicated things and does not prove to be a headache later on.
