Marketing is an inevitable activity these days and there are various ways and means of doing it. Email marketing has become very popular due to the IT age we are living in. However, it requires a highly skilled person carry out email marketing successfully. Not all email marketing practices prove to be the best for all companies. However, here are certain common mistakes that ruin your email marketing and give you ineffective results of it.

- Sloppy copy:

Read and re-read your copy before sending it across and if need be get it checked with a professional or better option is to do a quick spelling and grammar check on the word document. Check if the language you have written in it is up to the mark. Especially check the usage of homonyms and homophones words as chances are that you might have made mistakes of ‘their’ and ‘there’ or ‘than’ and ‘then’. These are minor mistakes but make a lot of difference. Hence be careful with it.

- Shabby coding:

Make sure that you have proper width of the pixel ideally 600 pixel width is preferred. This will also avoid the usage of scrolling it to right or left and hence will retain the interest of the reader. Using CSS in HTML coding is another mistake as the message can be lost by using this combination and will eventually make all your efforts go in vain. Make sure that the images you wish to display in the letter is visible.

- Ineffective Call to Action:

Call to action is one of the best trump cards that you can hold for attracting the prospective clients. Make sure that you have very effective textual content for call to action. Many a times these are not placed in the appropriate places or may be more images are used for call to action which is not the best thing to do. Therefore, make sure that you place the call to action in the right places such as the left most area or margin is an ideal place for it.

- Improper subject lines:

Many of the email marketers know this very nicely but yet they make mistakes of writing poor subject lines. There are certain styles of writing that headlines which can be flagged under SPAM. For instance here is the list of the style that you must avoid writing in the subject lines-

TOO MANY CAPITAL LETTERS in comparison to the small letters.

Repeating capital letters with words such as SALE, DISCOUNT and so on.

Flamboyant use of special characters such as *&@# and so on.

Subject lines beginning with Free or Hey or Sale.

- Ambiguous ‘From’ address:

Generally, if the receiver gets mail from an unknown and suspicious looking sender address then chances are that they delete the mail even before opening it, so forget about reading it. Therefore, make sure that you create an email address that is valid and shows your genuineness.

Email marketing has become one of the most popular methods of marketing these days. However, a recently done survey resulted that, 180 marketers in Europe were not for sure as to their marketing mails really reached the inbox of the people or went in the list of junk mails. Most the marketers nearly 39% feel that if the mail sent did not bounce back then it was surely sent to the addressee. Nonetheless, many of the marketers know that this is not the case.

The email marketers know very well that even if they have sent the mails, it cannot be assured that the emails actually reached the concerned person’s inbox. This could be because generally the majority of them have ISPs that block such emails. This has made the marketers more apprehensive about ISPs such as BT, Free.fr, Neuf, Orange, and T-Oline. All ISPs irrelevant as to whether they are smallest or the largest all of them filters the emails for their customers so that there are no spam mails in the account.

The survey also revealed that most of the marketers are unaware of this with 26% who did not believe that mails could be blocked and the 12% of them were blessedly ignorant of this fact. There are various kinds of filters like firewall filters, spam filters, and others that can be easily set up by the email account holder.

Many of the mails even if they reach the inbox successfully are not read and simply deleted by the users as these mails are generally written a very selfish tone. The marketing mails do not really provide with any valuable or relevant information to the readers and therefore, are deleted even before checking them.

A quick fix solution to this problem is that one should concentrate on writing an email that is not boring and blowing our own horns. Your email should also link to other useful sites that can provide the reader with additional information. This is especially good for the small businesses. Another way is to genuinely have an offer that is in the best of interest of the readers, it could be something as simple as coupons or whatever, but it should be unique and useful. This can get your email noticed immediately.

o we are deep in a recession economy, marketing budgets and headcounts are being cut, yet we are seeing an increase in requests for the outsourcing of email production and campaigns. Why is this?

Well let’s take a little time to explore the variables in play here. As marketers turn to more cost effective channels, email is becoming more popular than ever – according to a recent Forrester study the number of marketing messages for the average email user is predicted to double by 2014. This makes the email channel even more competitive and crowded, causing a dilution of open, click and conversion rates.

The only way to genuinely attract attention and boost performance is to send more relevant and personalized mails. To experienced email marketers this will not be news, and it is common wisdom nowadays to absolutely progress beyond broadcast (or blast) mailing tactics to attain any kind of click thru and conversion response.

There are a number of campaign types that increase relevance beyond broadcast, such as ‘life cycle’, ‘clickstream’ and ‘targeted’. JupiterResearch states that these types of campaigns are up to 18 times more profitable than broadcast. Each of these types leverage known intelligence about the recipient, whether based on a user triggered event, online behavior, or persona driven. BUT in order to actually create a highly relevant campaign, each mail needs to be customized to each identified audience segment and ideally personalized for each recipient – both of which increase the number of steps and effort in the overall process of producing a campaign from start to finish.
